Design of Automatic Feeding Device for Steel Pipe Shot Blasting Machine

This paper designs a special automatic feeding device for steel pipe shot blasting machines, which mainly consists of a feeding rack, a dial plate, a feeding roller conveyor, and a power system.

The rotary dial plate lifts one steel pipe from the feeding rack, and the pipe rolls along the inclined surface of the dial plate, being accurately placed onto the feeding roller conveyor and sent into the shot blasting chamber.

Each rotation of the dial plate can feed two steel pipes onto the roller conveyor. The dial plate adopts a combined structure, which reduces the force between the dial plate and the waiting pipes, lowering vibration and noise.

This design reduces labor intensity for workers and improves work efficiency by more than four times compared to manual feeding.

As pipes for transporting fluids such as petroleum, natural gas, water, coal gas, and steam, steel pipes are widely used in industries like petrochemicals, steel, urban central heating, and water supply and drainage. Additionally, compared to solid steel, steel pipes are lighter under the same bending and torsional strength, so they are also extensively used in manufacturing mechanical parts and engineering components. To improve the service life of steel pipes, the inner and outer surfaces need treatments such as strengthening, rust removal, and painting. Surface shot blasting and sandblasting can strengthen the surface, enhance fatigue strength and corrosion resistance, and increase the adhesion between the paint and the metal surface. The steel pipe shot blasting machine is an automated equipment produced by our company for processing the outer surface of steel pipes, mainly used for shot blasting treatment of steel pipes with a diameter not exceeding 76 millimeters. Similar equipment often uses manual feeding, which results in high labor intensity, long feeding times, and poor rhythm control, reducing shot blasting efficiency. This paper designs a special automatic feeding device for steel pipe shot blasting machines.

2 Working Principle of the Automatic Feeding Device

Its working principle is as follows: First, multiple steel pipes requiring shot blasting are placed on an inclined feeding rack. Under gravity, the pipes align neatly against the lower stop block of the feeding rack, positioning the workpieces. The power system (reducer) provides power to the dial plate, driving it to rotate clockwise through chain transmission. The rotation of the dial plate sends the pipes onto the feeding roller conveyor, and the continuous rotation of the feeding rollers feeds the workpieces into the shot blasting chamber for the next process of shot blasting treatment.
